My first year back in college after a ten-year hiatus, I walked into class and was greeted by a five-foot-tall woman with black and red hair. She introduced herself as our professor and began going over the syllabus. Then she mentioned there was something we’d need for the class that wasn’t on the supply list. “Magazines,” she said. “You’re going to need as many magazines as you can get your hands on.” She wasn’t kidding; we truly did need as many as we could find. Over about 2.5 weeks, we completed 16 collages and turned in our 6 best pieces for assessment. This assignment taught me the basic hand skills that I would need moving forward in the intensive degree program.
